Sources and method

The words

The 1,129 words follow the Goethe-Institut word list for Start Deutsch 1 (674 words), the Menschen A1 course by Hueber (233 more words from its lessons), and 222 everyday words that fill the gaps in each topic. The books decided what to teach and in what order. Nothing is copied from them: every explanation and every example sentence on this site was written for it.

The grammar forms

Genders and plurals were checked against a word list drawn from Wiktionary. Verb forms were checked against the german-verbs-dict lexicon. A few words could not be confirmed this way and were checked by hand.

Sentences

Every word has a model sentence and at least two more, in German with English and Arabic. 77 model sentences can be taken apart with “Look closer”. The Arabic is Modern Standard Arabic.

Stories

The 21 stories were written for this site. Each one practises one grammar article and uses only the grammar of that article and the ones before it. The German was checked against the same dictionaries as the word list.

Pictures

The small pictures on the word pages are icons from Phosphor Icons (MIT licence, © 2023 Phosphor Icons), turned into text characters and set in Courier Prime (SIL Open Font Licence). Only words a picture can show clearly have one.

Sound

“Hear it” uses your device's own German voice. Its quality depends on the device, and the button is hidden where no German voice exists.

Colours

The small squares before nouns show the gender: blue for der, red for die, green for das. The article is always printed beside them.
