Yesterday I was tired.

For sein and haben, one short word.

war, hatte.

No helper verb needed.

Most verbs use the perfect for the past. sein and haben are the exception: in everyday German you say ich war and ich hatte, not ich bin gewesen or ich habe gehabt.

ich and er are the same: ich war, er war; ich hatte, er hatte.
