Two sentences become one.
und adds.
aber contrasts.
oder offers a choice.
denn gives the reason.
These four words join two full sentences without changing the word order. They stand in “position zero”: after them, the sentence starts again as normal, with something in position one and the verb in position two.

| aber | Ich bin müde, aber ich komme mit. |

Leaving words out
With und and oder, you can drop the repeated subject: Ich koche und esse.
denn and weil
At A2 you will meet weil (because), which sends the verb to the end: …, weil ich krank bin. At A1, denn keeps things simple.
sondern after a negative
sondern corrects something after nicht or kein: Das ist kein Tee, sondern Kaffee.
