Every noun has a gender.

Masculine takes der.

Feminine takes die.

Neuter takes das.

Learn each noun with its article.

In German every noun is masculine, feminine or neuter. The gender belongs to the word, not to the thing: a table is masculine, a lamp is feminine, a girl is neuter (das Mädchen, because of the ending -chen).

Compound nouns

A compound takes the gender of its last part: das Haus + die Tür = die Haustür; die Kinder + das Zimmer = das Kinderzimmer.

Pronouns follow the gender

der Tisch → er, die Lampe → sie, das Bett → es. So German says “he” about a table: Der Tisch ist schön. Er ist neu.
