Two words for “not”.

kein goes with a noun.

nicht goes with everything else.

kein takes the endings of ein.

nicht moves to the end.

If you would say ein or nothing at all before a noun, the negative is kein: Ich habe ein Auto → Ich habe kein Auto. Ich habe Zeit → Ich habe keine Zeit.

nicht negates verbs, adjectives, names and nouns with der or mein. It usually stands near the end of the sentence, after the object, but before an adjective or a place.

A noun without an article: kein. Zeit is feminine, so keine.

und komme nicht.

A verb: nicht, at the end.

More negative words: nichts (nothing), nie (never), niemand (nobody).

Das Hotel ist nicht teuer.The hotel isn't expensive.الفندق ليس غاليًا.

Where nicht goes
  • At the end: Ich verstehe das nicht.
  • Before an adjective: Das ist nicht gut.
  • Before a place: Er wohnt nicht in Berlin.
  • Before the second verb part: Ich kann nicht kommen. Ich rufe dich nicht an.

nicht mehr, kein … mehr: Ich rauche nicht mehr. Wir haben keine Milch mehr.
