When exactly?

um for the clock.

am for days.

im for months and seasons.

That covers most of it.

Each kind of time has its own preposition. Learn them as fixed pairs.

Exceptions: in der Nacht (at night), and am Wochenende.

Years

A year usually stands alone: Ich bin 1999 geboren. Or with im Jahr: im Jahr 1999. Never in 1999.

Without a preposition

In the accusative: jeden Tag, nächste Woche, letzten Sommer. And with -s: montags, morgens, abends.

Asking about time

Wann? – Um acht. / Am Montag. / Im Mai.
Seit wann? – Seit Montag.
Wie lange? – Zwei Stunden.
Bis wann? – Bis Freitag.
