One stem, six endings.
Take wohnen.
Drop -en: wohn-.
Add the ending for the person.
That's the present tense.
Most German verbs follow one pattern. The infinitive ends in -en. Take that off and you have the stem. Each person adds its own ending to the stem.
| Person | Ending | wohnen |
|---|---|---|
| ich | -e | ich wohne |
| du | -st | du wohnst |
| er, sie, es | -t | er wohnt |
| wir | -en | wir wohnen |
| ihr | -t | ihr wohnt |
| sie, Sie | -en | sie wohnen |
The present tense covers a lot: what is happening now, what happens often, and what is planned. Ich arbeite morgen means “I'm working tomorrow”. There is no separate “-ing” form.
When the stem ends in -t or -d, an e slips in: du arbeitest, er findet.
Look closer
Morgen arbeite ich nicht.
I'm not working tomorrow.لن أعمل غدًا.Morgen
Something else stands first, here a time.
arbeite
The verb stays in second place, with the ich ending. The -e- is there because the stem ends in t.
ich
So the subject moves behind the verb.
nicht.
nicht at the end. The present tense here means the future.
Some strong verbs change their vowel in two forms.
| e → i / ie | a → ä |
|---|---|
| sprechen: du sprichst, er spricht | fahren: du fährst, er fährt |
| essen: du isst, er isst | schlafen: du schläfst, er schläft |
| lesen: du liest, er liest | tragen: du trägst, er trägt |
| sehen: du siehst, er sieht | laufen: du läufst, er läuft |
Only du and er, sie, es change. Every other form keeps the vowel of the infinitive: ich spreche, wir sprechen.
